The American Flag Display Program
Raise A Flag for Middleton
Columns of American flags stand sentinel along Middleton roadways on specified holidays as a show of patriotic pride for our community.
VFW Post 8216 has maintained the Dick Horan American Flag Display Program in Middleton since the early 1970s.
The ‘Flags’ Program promotes patriotism, honors military service, and recognizes the sacrifices of our Veterans, our military members, and their loved ones.
Contributions from our local business community, youth organizations, and friends make it happen. Middleton shines red, white, and blue on days of national celebration and remembrance.

Who Will You Honor?
When you raise the flag, particularly on days of observance, you find yourself thinking about those who serve our country.
Perhaps your grandfather served. Or a parent, sibling, co-worker, or close friend. Maybe you served. You feel a strong connection to our military service members who choose duty, honor, and country. You understand the many sacrifices that come along with that choice. One way to demonstrate your respect–sponsor a flag in their name.
Keeping the Stories Alive
Middleton’s band of Veterans honored Richard Horan, one of our own, by naming the program after him in 2021.
Dick chaired the Flags committee for several years and spent a lot of time and energy to keep the flags flying. It’s his good humor we remember, his love of fishing with his grandkids, and his little red convertible. Dick gave a lifetime of service to our VFW and the Middleton community. We keep his story alive through the ‘Dick Horan American Flags Display Program’. And, whew, it’s a mouthful.
“Do you know how proud I was? I was so proud that I walked around with an American flag around my shoulders all day long.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Former Governor of California
